Three Testify on R.R. Mishap

Coroner William C. Tredor yesterday examined three witnesses in his inquest into the death of Carmelo Angeletto, 56 of 225 Front street, who died July 19 of injuries sustained three days earlier when he was struck by a New York Central switch locomotive in the freight yard near Front street.

The witnesses were Fred A. Miller, engineer on the switch engine. He said he did not see Angeletto until after the accident, as he was on the opposite side of the cab.

William W. Matthews of this city, fireman on the engine. He said he saw Angeletto walking along the track just before the accident. He said at that time Angeletto was far enough away from the the track so that the engine could not strike him. Matthews leaned down to look at his watergauge, he said, and when he looked out the cab window again an instant later Angeletto was walking at an angle that would bring him in the path of the engine. Matthews shouted to warn Angeletto and the engineer, he said immediately applied the emergency brake, but Angeletto was struck by the locomotive.

Matthew Relihan of 840 Lincoln Avenue, a brakeman who was riding on the switch engine told the same story as Matthews.

After the Angeletto inqest, Coroner Trder gave decisions into two other cases in which inquests had been held previously, exonerating the drivers in both cases ….
