OTEGO _ Adelbert Hewitt Smith, 87, passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Otsego Manor.
He was born July 12, 1922, in Newark, N.J., the son of Adelbert Hewitt and Margaret (Wright) Smith.
Adelbert was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II from 1942 to 1946, obtaining the rank of corporal.
He married Grace Mary McDonald on Jan. 24, 1948. They were married 25 years until her death Jan. 20, 1973. He then married Harriet Kelker on June 19, 1976, in Irvington. She predeceased him Sept. 22, 2009.
He was employed for Dell Labs on Long Island as a truck driver.
Adelbert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oneonta.
He is survived by five children and their spouses, Thomas and Carol Smith, James and Linda Smith, Eileen and Patrick Passaretti, Robert and Kathleen Smith and Maureen and Umberto Angilletta; grandchildren, Christopher Masullo (Debi), Kimmarie Schade (William), Patricia Smith, Thomas M. Smith (Jessi), Danielle P. Ragavanis (Christos), Nicole M. Passaretti, James H. Smith II, Bryan Smith (Adrienne), Dawn Smith, Anthony Passaretti, Traci Smith, Gina Marie Angilletta and Umberto Angilletta; great-grandchildren, Paige, Rachel and Amanda Masullo, Colin Rogers and Dylan Smith; six nieces; seven nephews; brother-in-law, Thomas McDonald; and sister-in-law, Catherine Neil.
He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Blanch and Margaret; and a brother, Howard.
Calling hours were held Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a funeral service at 8 p.m. at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.
Interment for Adelbert, with full military honors and for Harriet will be in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale on 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009.
